Private Sat Prep Courses Do They Really Work? By Groshan Fabiola When time comes for high school students to take their SAT, they are often under continuous pressure from all sides. Their parents expect them to do well on these tests, as their future depends a great deal on where they go to college. We all know though that their best may not always be enough and that there’s always tons of pressure from other competitive students. Even though the SAT assesses each individual’s ability to analyze and solve problems and his or her academic skills for college, in the end it still comes down to how well you’ve done compared to the other students in your high school. Furthermore, there’s the pressure that comes from the student’s ambition to do well on the tests while pleasing everyone, including parents and teachers. Under these circumstances, there is no wonder that more and more anxiety and depression related illnesses are reported each year among teenagers. The struggle to achieve perfection can sometimes have negative consequences. No one is denying that success is critical at certain moments in a person’s life, and the SAT is one of those times when everything has to go well. However, student ambition can be channeled through healthy and productive ways, without having to be faced with anxiety problems related to admissions.
For most students, the somewhat lengthy road to getting into or university, and ultimately the road to academic success starts with the SAT (Scholastic Assessment test or Scholastic Aptitude Test). As has been said
before, the SAT, which is developed by the Board, assesses the skills that students have learned in high school and will need in college. In other words, much of the work that students have put in during high school years is reflected in their SAT scores. The SAT scores are all the more important with the increased selectiveness of universities and colleges, as a result of the increasing number of applicants each year.
So, what can be done to maximize your SAT scores? Having acknowledged the importance of scoring high in the SAT, many students choose a good SAT preparation course to help them make the most of this testing experience that their future as students depends so much on. How can SAT prep help future applicants? First, it contributes significantly to the reduction of test-related anxieties, allowing students to focus and perform better. Second, fear of the unknown is a major cause of poor performance in tests, sometimes even greater than the lack of thorough study and preparation for the test. Based on this fact, these test prep classes focus on allowing students to gain considerable knowledge of testing methods. In other words, SAT prep courses will show students exactly what to expect of the test, allowing them to be more relaxed and confident. Test prep courses are also an excellent opportunity for students to identify any weak points that they may have and understand specific topics thoroughly.
The bottom line is that the SAT prep courses help students a great deal. Students who attend such classes and boot camps will see how they manage to eliminate the fear of an unknown test, relax, and strengthen their knowledge of topics to be tested. These test prep classes will give students confidence, raise their scores and enable them to get into more selective colleges. Maryland loses title game to N. Carolina in final seconds Top-seeded Maryland lost the NCAA title game to third-seeded North Carolina, 3-2, on Danielle Forword 's goal off a penalty corner with 11.7 seconds to play Sunday in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Tar Heels (20-2) earned their sixth NCAA championship and second in the past three years. Maryland (23-1), the defending champion, had beaten Carolina, 4-1, in Chapel Hill. The Terps led in shots 8-1 in a scoreless first half and got on the board seven minutes into the second half on a breakaway goal by Nicole Muracco . They led for the next 18 minutes until Forword tied it after Maryland's Alexis Pappas received a yellow card. Less than two minutes later, the Terps regained the lead when Megan Frazer scored on a penalty corner rebound. North Carolina coach Karen Shelton pulled goalkeeper Jackie Kintzer in favor of an additional field player, and the gamble paid off three minutes later when Illse Davids took a pass from Katelyn Falgowski and fired a reverse shot from the left-center of the circle past charging goalie Alison Grater. The winning goal, Forword's 17th of the season, was assisted by Falgowski and Caitlin Van Sickle on North Carolina's seventh penalty corner of the day. "We're disappointed, certainly, in not winning the national championship," Maryland coach Missy Meharg said. "We want to give a lot of credit to a very disciplined Carolina team."

Herrick's goal with 4:05 left puts Terps into round of 16 The Maryland men captured their eighth-straight Sweet 16 berth by beating No. 7 seed Penn State, 2-1, in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Sunday. Jason Herrick scored the game-winner with 4:05 remaining to lift the Terps against a Nittany Lions squad that was undefeated at home in 2009. Maryland took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute when Billy Cortes received a cross from Drew Yates , took two dribbles and blasted the ball past the goalie. Penn State tied the game in the 48th minute when Brian Forgue converted Andres Casais ' free kick. Herrick's seventh game-winner of the year came on a header that was assisted by Cortes. "I'm just real proud of the character and championship fiber that our team showed today," said Terps coach Sasho Cirvoski , who earned his 250th career win. "I think we had to do that to win and they found a way to get it done." Maryland will play 10th-seeded Harvard on Sunday in Cambridge, Mass.
